What is the HealthEx partnership?
23andMe has partnered with HealthEx to provide a secure, streamlined way to connect your electronic health records (EHR) from various healthcare providers directly to your 23andMe profile. HealthEx acts as a secure bridge, allowing you to authenticate with your doctor's patient portal and authorize the sharing of your health data such as lab results, medications, and clinical visits with 23andMe.
HealthEx is a designated Individual Access Service (IAS) provider operating under the TEFCA framework, which means it meets strict federal standards for health data access and interoperability. Your records are retrieved on your behalf using the same secure methods you would use if you requested them directly from your care provider — just faster and in a more usable format.
We are currently testing the HealthEx connection with a small group of users to evaluate the best ways to integrate external health records.
Data security and privacy
We take your privacy seriously. Once connected to HealthEx, the data you choose to share is subject to HealthEx's Privacy Statement, which can be reviewed here. Once imported to 23andMe, we process and protect personal information in accordance with our Privacy Statement. We will not sell your health information. You are always in control of your data and can choose to disconnect or delete your information at any time.
For full details on how HealthEx handles your data, including their encryption standards, HIPAA compliance, and SOC2 certification, visit the HealthEx privacy and security guide.
For the latest information, please review HealthEx’s Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and TEFCA Privacy and Security Notice.

How long does it take to get my records?
In HealthEx’s own words: Most records are available within minutes of connecting to a provider. Some facilities may take longer (up to 1 hour) depending on their systems.
How is HealthEx different from my hospital’s patient portal?
In HealthEx’s own words: HealthEx aggregates user’s longitudinal history across all sources of records and health information. This makes it possible to share any part of the health record the user chooses directly with trusted third parties, digital apps and AI agents. It is a tool specifically designed to empower end users with data, insights and actions to get better, faster and higher-value care across both traditional and emerging approaches to healthcare.
Who owns my health data?
In HealthEx’s own words: You do. HealthEx believes in patient data rights—your medical information belongs to you, and you should be able to access and control it. HealthEx is simply the tool that makes exercising those rights, and connecting your information to the people and places that provide you care, easier.
What parts of my clinical record can I access through HealthEx?
In HealthEx’s own words: Users can access a wide range of medical records including lab results, medications, immunizations, visit summaries, diagnoses, procedures, and clinical notes. The specific information available depends on what healthcare providers have in their systems. HealthEx is also actively adding support for other systems of information such as wearables, genetic tests, and imaging centers.
What are health records?
Health records are electronic files from past visits to doctors, hospitals, and clinics. They may include diagnoses, medications, allergies, test results, procedures, and other details about your care.
What if my records were not found?
If HealthEx could not locate your records, the most common causes are:
- Your provider is not yet live on the TEFCA network
- Your contact information on file with your provider doesn’t match what you entered
- Your records are stored under a different name or date of birth (e.g., following a name change)
- Your provider’s systems have a delay in updating records after a recent visit
To resolve this, try adding providers manually through the HealthEx provider search, confirm your contact details are up to date with your care team, or contact your provider directly to confirm your records are available electronically.
What if I have records from providers outside the U.S.?
Currently, HealthEx only connects to U.S.-based healthcare providers. International records may be supported in the future.
How long can my records be accessed for?
HealthEx consent is valid for one year from the date you authorize it. As long as your consent is active, your records can be refreshed automatically — you do not need to repeat the full setup process. If consent expires, you will need to re-authorize through HealthEx to resume syncing.
Most records are available within minutes of connecting a provider. Some facilities may take up to one hour depending on their systems, and HealthEx will notify you once those records become available.
Are there any additional fees applied to me?
No.

Why am I seeing Fasten instead of HealthEx?
In HealthEx’s own words: HealthEx locates records 2 ways to ensure maximum coverage:
- Automatically via the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement Network (TEFCA)
- Manually via other Qualified Health Information Networks (QHINs) and Health Information Exchange (HIEs) networks, such as FASTEN
During the process of linking your health records, you might occasionally see the name Fasten appear on the login and authentication screens instead of HealthEx. Here is why that happens:
HealthEx partners with Fasten Health as a supplemental data retrieval layer for providers that are not yet reachable through the TEFCA network. Fasten provides specialized infrastructure to communicate with healthcare systems and hospitals outside TEFCA coverage. Both HealthEx and Fasten use enterprise-grade encryption and strict privacy standards to ensure your medical data is transferred safely. Neither company sells your personal health information.
