23andMe trains DaNA, an AI assistant, on scientific and clinical expertise. DaNA helps you explore the bigger picture of your health, and what you can do to improve it.
What is DaNA?
DaNA is an AI assistant that uses artificial intelligence to power features available to 23andMe+ Premium and Total Health members. DaNA is available through a chat interface to answer questions related to 23andMe products and services, and also powers certain 23andMe+ features such as health insights and recommendations (our DaNA-powered Health Summary). Learn more about DaNA chat in our AI Assistant Chat FAQs. Keep reading below for more information about the DaNA-powered Health Summary.

How does DaNA create my health summary?
To give you a holistic view, our AI assistant DaNA looks at these primary categories of information:
- Your Genetics: The “blueprint” you were born with, including predispositions for certain conditions.
- Your Biomarkers: Data from your blood tests and other health measures that show how your body is actually doing.
- Your Lifestyle: Your patterns around activities like exercise, sleep, and nutrition that affect your health trajectory.
- DaNA is also aware of basic demographic information in your profile, such as your age and birth sex.
Then, DaNA puts together a picture of your health today:
- Outdated signals: If your lab results are no longer representative of your health today, DaNA flags them. This isn’t a nag - it’s because your health strategy shouldn’t be based on how your body was functioning in the past.
- Key genetic findings: DaNA identifies specific genetic findings that may need clinical follow-up or action. If you haven’t selected to receive certain reports or completed the necessary tutorials and opt-in’s related to these genetic insights, DaNA will let you know.
- Your health drivers: DaNA is cross-checking your genetic tendencies against your actual biomarkers to help identify how your risks may be playing out and how to manage your personal trajectory. The more data points you have over time, the better the AI will be at finding the patterns that matter most.
- Recommendations: DaNA looks across your health areas, risk patterns, and current lifestyle patterns to select actionable, evidence-based recommendations that may have the highest impact for you.
We are constantly evolving what we include in the AI Health Summary, and will keep updating you as our science improves.
What additional information can I provide to DaNA?
DaNA takes into account your genetic findings. But keep in mind that without your data, DaNA can only tell you about your genetic potential, not your current and most complete health picture.
- You can connect your Apple HealthKit to share wearable and medical records information.
- You can manually add blood lab biomarkers by clicking the “+” next to each biomarker.
- You can answer the lifestyle survey (it opens every 3 months).
What other knowledge is DaNA using?
DaNA uses knowledge from 23andMe-developed clinical frameworks to synthesize your genetic, biomarker, and lifestyle data together to identify your key insights and recommendations. DaNA also uses scientific and medical resources on the web to identify impactful lifestyle actions that may help you address your health areas.
How accurate is DaNA?
DaNA strives to produce accurate and helpful information based on its available knowledge. However, as with all generative AI, DaNA may not always produce perfectly appropriate content or be entirely accurate. DaNA's content is not individually reviewed. This tool is intended for educational purposes and should not be used as medical advice.
