December 6 2013: Pending an FDA decision, 23andMe no longer offers new customers access to health reports. Customers who received their health information prior to November 22, 2013 will still be able to see their health reports, but those who purchased after that time will only receive their ancestry information as well as access to their uninterpreted raw data. These new customers may receive health reports in the future dependent on FDA marketing authorization.
Preliminary Research includes results of studies that still need to be confirmed by the scientific community. It also includes topics where there may be contradictory evidence. The results of these studies are not conclusive.
In general, findings from larger studies are more likely to hold up upon replication by other researchers. However, in keeping with scientific principles, we wait for an effect to be independently confirmed before designating it Established Research.
Topics in Preliminary Research may eventually be "promoted" to Established Research if suitable follow-up studies are performed.
Preliminary Research reports are ranked with one, two, or three stars:
More than 750 people with the condition were studied, but the findings still need to be confirmed by the scientific community in an independent study of similar size.
Fewer than 750 people were studied. Multiple large studies are needed to confirm these findings.
Fewer than 100 people were studied. Multiple large studies are needed to confirm these findings.
